Design’s Approved For New Hotel & Apartment Block On Leman Street, Aldgate

Project Description

Walker Modular have secured the contract for a new 23-storey hotel & serviced apartment block on Leman Street, part of the Aldgate Regeneration Scheme. It will be part of a new commercial hub providing amenities for an area that is changing rapidly and adds to more than 80,000 square metres of prospective office space.

The slender tower responds to the site’s modest footprint of 32m x 16m with a reduced palette of materials selected to emphasise the clean lines of the form. Its two long façades are expressed as curved glass shields wrapped around the concrete structure and are peeled back to reveal stone clad ‘bookends’. DMA and planning consultants Barton Willmore have worked closely with Tower Hamlets’ planners and the GLA to develop a proposal that maximises the active street frontage. A new public pedestrian route has been introduced, passing through the centre of the building allowing the hotel lobby, cafe and bar to open out on four sides of the ground floor. A restaurant at first floor level overlooks and further animates the public realm.
